Chapter Four

Brook sucked in a deep breath. The jaguar hybrid was no longer pressing on her chest, snapping at her. Why? The creature was created to be the ultimate predator. Once it set its sights on its prey, the feline would not back down until its prey was dead. She should be dead.

Then she heard a scream. The predator had found someone else. Who? When she’d been fighting the beast, she thought she’d seen another person. Melina. But surely her lover was a figment of her imagination, her life flashing before her eyes.

She bent her knee and used inertia and her stomach muscles to pull herself up. If Melina was truly there, she had to help her.

Pain sliced down her side. Tiny stars twinkled in front of her eyes. Fuck!

The blast of a shotgun echoed through her head, leaving her ears ringing.

Not again! Between Planet Core and the jaguar hybrid, she was destined to die before night fell on Airondelle.

The feline hissed and growled nearby. Brook cringed, expecting it to strike again.

A heavy forced slammed her back to the ground. “Lie still.”

Female, but not Melina. What the hell is going on? Only three women had ever been sent to Airondelle; her, Melina, wherever she was, and Calla. Though Calla had returned to Earth, so it couldn’t be her.

Another blast roared, followed by an inhuman wail. The beast?

The large body rolled to the side, allowing her to breathe again. A dozen people stood around them, none of whom she recognized. They were of varying nationalities, all wearing dull, worn-out clothing—nothing issued by Planet Core. Mostly women, but some men, too.

Someone extended a hand. The blonde-haired woman who had tackled her. She hesitated to accept the help, finding nothing friendly in the cold stare.

“Are you coming?” She raised an eyebrow. “Or do you want us to leave you out here to be prey for the next big cat looking for lunch?”

Brook reached for the woman’s hand. “Thank you for coming to my rescue. But tell me, was there someone else with me?”

The woman pulled her to her feet. “You know the victim?”

Victim? “Oh God, please tell me she’s not dead.”

With a shake of her head, the woman frowned. “We’re not sure yet.”

Darkness. Brook struggled to breathe, sucking cloth into her mouth.

Grabbing at her face, she tried to yank it off, but hands gripped her wrists, pulling her arms behind her back.

“Let me go!” She struggled in their grasp, but every moment intensified the agony from her injuries.

Then cold steel wrapped around her wrists, securing them together. Metal handcuffs. Shit. Everything these people possessed had been replaced years ago by more efficient weapons and restraints. Brook rolled her shoulder, trying to ease the pain.

“You really want us to leave you out here?” The same woman’s voice. She had to be their leader.

“No, but….” She wouldn’t survive if she stayed out on her own. Yet, how can I trust these people?

“Who are you? Where are you taking me?”

“Someplace safe. That’s all you need to know.
